The
Guesthouses
There
are three houses at each wing overlooking a central wooden courtyard
that opens skyward. The
West Wing houses the Rumah Rhu Rendang, Tengku Ismail's private
quarter - a bedroom and study, Rumah Kuala Ibai, the living
and main dining area, and Rumah Tasek with a kitchen for household
staff. On the ground floor are worker's quarters as well as the Songket
workshop. The
East Wing houses the Rumah Atas Tol, the Songket gallery and
two guesthouses which are the Rumah Sungai Rengas and Rumah
Nesan Empat. On
the other side of the grounds by the lotus pond is the Rumah Chendering,
a "Balai Wakaf" or resting pavillion. Many of Tengku Ismail's envisages
includes graciously holding traditional performances such as a "Mak
Yong" the Malay court dance drama and Wayang Kulit (Puppet Shadow
play) to while away the evenings. In
an attempt to make the complex self-sufficient and accessible to the
public, three comfortable guesthouses are available for paying guests.
These are the Rumah Sungai Rengas, Rumah Nesan Empat
and Rumah Rhu Dua, guesthouses by the riverbank built separately
from the complex. Each abode boasts an air-conditioned bedroom, a
comfortable living area, a serambi (an open veranda) with pleasant
views of the surroundings for relaxing, and a tropical-style bathroom.
